The International Organisation of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language was founded in 2008 following several years of discussions amongst educators and researchers from over thirty countries.

The main focus of the organisation’s activities is the promotion of academic, scientific and cultural exchange between teachers of English at schools, colleges and other institutions in countries in which English is taught as a foreign, rather than a second language. Specifically, this means countries in which English can not be regarded as a native language and in which English is rarely spoken outside the classroom. As a result of the global expansion of English as lingua franca of international business and culture, teachers in EFL countries are confronted by a special set of challenges and a growing need for more appropriate methodologies and insights into the teaching and learning of English as a Foreign Language.

IOTEFL is a young organisation and is currently seeking like-minded partners worldwide. In particular, we would like to hear from educational institutions and teachers’ associations who share our interests and aims. We are in a position to offer a limited number of scholarship and sponsorship programs in order to promote and enhance the flow of specialised knowledge and expertise between students, educators and researchers in an international context.
